At Service K-9 Centre, we feel that there is a lack of serious dogs and serious training. Dog Sports are a great way of getting your dog physically and mentally in shape but most of the training is too static. We believe that clubs like Practical Protection Dog (PPD) and Ring provide an alternative for dogs, trainers and owners. The situations that the dogs are put in are more realistic.
WARNING!!!! Any information on this site is meant to be used by experienced trainers. Service K-9 Centre is not responsible for accidents or injuries in any way shape or form that may result from training with this information. Dog training is serious business and should not be taken lightly.
Owning a properly trained personal protection dog is a great experience. However it takes time, patience and knowledge. The dog must be calm, solid physically and mentally and social enough so that he does not think that everyone is out to get him. The dog being aggressive alone is not enough. Sure it helps that you own a dog that will put himself between you and the harm but you also should be able to take him out for a walk without worrying about him biting a kid. If you have dog that you feel is a good protection dog, think about this. Can you put him in a room in your house and let a total stranger in, and your protection machine will stay there watching the stranger with total control? Or every time you have to let someone in your house, you have to lock up your trained protection tool away in the bathroom or in a crate. Maybe it is you who is trained to lock him up every time. What good is a personal protection dog whose job is to protect you if he needs to be locked up all the time? What if that one time you lock him up is the time you needed him the most. That is why it is extremely important to implement control in the training. This will keep Police dogs from biting innocent bystanders. Of course let us not forget the training that the K-9 handler has to receive to understand the limits of his dog. It is vital that he knows how his partner will react in certain situations.
For all of these reasons, dog sports like KNPV and Schutzhund are great starting points. It is a real treat to see a trained dog with his handler in perfect harmony. But do not assume that a good sport dog will make a good Protection dog. Depending on the dog, a dog that is on fire on the trial field may not be worth spit on the street. Our Dog Training Club trains for bite work, agility and obedience on our training grounds in Urbana, Ohio so if you are interested in this type of training for your dog or you are interested period, let us know. The Club meets mostly every Saturday and Sunday around 10:00 a.m. call or email for more details and directions. There is a huge lack of knowledge and support in our region for this type of training. Give us a call at (937)244-0653, send us an email or write to us. Also join our mailing list and we will let you know when we have new puppies, trained and green dogs. Just email us at mailinglist. This site is frequently getting updating, so please check back with us. Also if you want us to put a link to your site let us know.
It has been our experience that dogs that have the history for this kind of work tend to produce dogs that are up to the kind of training that we do. For that reason we stick with Belgian Malinois, German Shepherds and American Bulldogs. We will work with other breeds but we concentrate on breeding the breeds mentioned above. Trying to accomplish our goal, we do not mind working with other kennels to produce the drives, nerves and working abilities in dogs that we require. Especially if we see a dog that impresses us. We are honest about the abilities of our dogs. We will let you know if we don't think that a dog will be good with kids or strangers. There are some dogs that just are not made for sporting.
